Lake Roberts: Car Camp, Kayak, Hike, Fish, Gila National Forest, NM
October 19, 2019 @ 6:30 am - October 20, 2019 @ 6:00 pm
The plan is to drive up to Lake Roberts Saturday morning and set-up our camp at the Mesa Campground. The Mesa Campground is nestled in the juniper and pinon trees on the mesa above Lake Roberts at a 6000 foot elevation. The campground has sites along the bluff with great views of the lake below. There are grills, picnic tables, garbage facilities and heated restrooms with flush toilets. Twelve of the sites have water and electric hookups. That afternoon, evening, and on Sunday morning we can go on a lake kayak trip and also go for short hikes on the many nearby trails. Sunday afternoon we pack up and head home.
Lake Roberts is named after Austin Robert, a US Forest Service pilot who was killed in 1960 when the plane he was flying to do a hay drop to starving deer in the winter, crashed into the side of a mountain that was hidden by a cloud. A dam was constructed across Sapillo Creek in May 1963 creating the lake. It has a surface area of approximately 70 acres, 35 feet maximum depth, and a land drainage area of approximately 87 miles.
There is a $15 per day fee for sites with electric and hook-ups. $10 per day for sites without hook-ups. 2 vehicles per site. There are no reservations required. The sites are first-come, first serve. “America the Beautiful” Interagency Senior and Access Passes are accepted for 1/2 price camping.
Bring your car camping gear, day hike gear and water craft (kayak, canoe, raft). Don’t forget your life vest. Well behaved dogs welcome. Check the weather forecast. Temps can drop below freezing at night.
