Mimbres River Backpack, Aldo Leopold Wilderness, NM

October 5, 2019 @ 6:30 am - October 6, 2019 @ 7:00 pm

The Aldo Leopold Wilderness stretches north-south along the crest of the Black Range for about 30 miles and has a maximum width of about 15 miles. The elevation of the crest ranges from 8,600 feet to 10,165 feet at McKnight Mountain, the highest point in the wilderness area. The crest of the range overlooks a series of east-west trending steep and narrow stream valleys, one thousand or more feet deep. The Mimbres River flows from one of the south-western mountain slopes to a closed drainage basin, a so-called endorheic basin, near the city of Deming, NM. where it sinks into the surrounding desert becoming ground water.

This will be a moderate backpack along trail #77 until we meet the Mimbres River where we will set-up our campsite. There are no river crossings unless hikers want to explore up or downstream once our camp is established. Most of the area was spared from any recent fire damage and the trail is in excellent condition. Our campsite alongside the Mimbres River is within a beautiful riparian area and habitat for a wide variety of species.
