Rancherias Canyon Backpack, Big Bend Ranch State Park
October 26, 2019 @ 5:30 am - October 27, 2019 @ 8:00 pm
This is not a beginners backpack.
Big Bend Ranch State Park is a 311,000-acre state park located on the Rio Grande in Brewster and Presidio counties, Texas. It is the largest state park in Texas. The closest major town is Presidio, Texas where the state park’s head office is located.
On this overnight backpack we will hike into Rancherias Canyon all the way up canyon to Rancherias Falls, a 70 to 80 foot pour-off where we will camp. There may or may not be water cascading down the canyon walls. Sunday morning we retrace our steps back to the trail-head and cars for the drive home.
This beautiful canyon contains several seasonal wet places with associated riparian vegetation. The lightly used trail leading up to our camp is very rocky with some scrambling required.
Backpack Rating: Moderate
Length: 5 miles to our campsite…..10 mile round-trip
Elevation Gain/Loss: 900 feet
Please note….THIS IS NOT A BEGINNERS BACKPACK. YOU SHOULD HAVE SOME PRIOR BACKPACKING EXPERIENCE. We will initially carry 4-5 liters of water each until we are sure of our water sources. So our backpacks will be heavy at the start. We did this outing last year and there was water below the falls and along the route as well as water cascading down the canyon walls.
Meetup at the east I-10, Horizon exit, El Paso Petro Truck Stop gas station and Iron Skillet restaurant parking lot at 5:30am. We will leave at 6am sharp. It is an approximate 5 hour drive to the trail-head. Before reaching the trail-head we will first stop at Ft. Leaton to obtain our permit and pay the associated fees. Or self-organize and meetup at Ft. Leaton at about 11 to 12am.
Participants should be in good physical condition to attend this outing. Folks with an underlying medical condition should avoid moderate and strenuous outings. Participants who RSVP yes also agree to the Release of Liability statement: https://www.meetup.com/meetup-group-dWiUFgVP/about/
For safety reasons we hike together and support each-other as a group/team, with the leader in control. We stop, rest, eat, etc. together. No one will be allowed to hike ahead at any time. If you are unwilling to comply with this please do not sign up. Thank-you
