South Rabbit Ear from the East

October 6, 2019 @ 6:45 am - 4:45 pm

Level: Difficult, experienced hikers/scramblers only
Length: 4.5
Elevation Gain: Lots! At least, 3,000 feet. Expect very steep sections and loose rock.

From Aguirre Springs we’ll go up the trail toward Baylor Pass, from which we will take a less traveled trail to the lower section of the canyon between South and Middle Rabbit Ears. This canyon is scenic and interesting, with the bottom made up mostly of clean boulders with some sections of bedrock. The scramble, while less difficult than that up the South Rabbit Ear itself, is quite exposed and not appropriate for beginners.

From the saddle between the two Rabbit Ears, we’ll take the usual route to the summit. This involves advanced scrambling, including a chimney. From here, we’ll retrace our steps back to the car.

We will meet at the Old Kmart location and leave for Aguirre Springs by 6:45 am. Feel free to meet us at the Baylor trailhead at 7 am but don’t forget money for the parking fee or bring your pass.
